Economic Development Abroad

Economic Development Abroad examines the world of economic development as it exists beyond the United States. American communities no longer just compete against each other, but face competition from cities around the globe in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and South America, as well as Canada and Mexico. Wherever innovative economic development strategies are being implemented, Economic Development Abroad seeks them out and brings those lessons home. The newsletter is published six times annually every other month and has a readership of about 3,000, which includes CUED members and a select group of foreign economic development agencies and academics. Subscriptions to Economic Development Abroad are only attainable as part of the comprehensive CUED membership, which is available at the CUED Membership Center.

Each eight-page issue of Economic Development Abroad focuses on a specific facet of the industry, exploring the most innovative and successful strategies in that area. Recent issues have focused on business incentives, tourism, small business financing, defense conversion, the environment and technology, as well as several issues that focused specifically on economic development in the Middle East, the Pacific Rim and Eastern Europe.

The issue on business incentives, for instance, featured articles on the European Union's strategies to control its members use of incentives called aids there) and its own plans for enticing growth in underdeveloped regions such as Portugal and Ireland; on the Canadian province of Newfoundland's strategy for using incentives to recover from the sudden dislocation of 50,000 fishing industry workers; on the use of incentives for redeveloping the former U.S. Naval base at Subic Bay in the Phillippines; on Canada's internal trade agreement against the use of incentives domestically; and Ireland's creative incentives plans for luring firms from other countries.

Other issues have included articles on innovative business incubators in the Palestinian West Bank and Gaza, on tourism strategies to boost the economy of South Africa, on an environmental research park in Denmark, and on a business development center in Russia, as well as others.
